1861. Les Hongrois envahissent la principauté de Bergame. Mario, époux d'Angelina qui gouverne le pays, prend la fuite. Cette dernière descend de Francesca, la fameuse dame au manteau d'hermine qui avait sauvé la nation, en accordant ses grâces à un duc ennemi. Or, le capitaine Ladislaus, ne tarde pas à trouver la jeune femme fort attirante. Seul ennui : Mario s'est réintroduit au château, déguisé en gitan…
