Sam est attardé mental. Il travaille dans un café où sa gentillesse suscite la sympathie des clients. Surtout, Sam élève seul sa petite fille Lucy, qu'il couvre d'affection. Mais les services sociaux s'alarment pour l'avenir de l'enfant et décident de la placer dans une famille d'accueil. Pour Sam, c'est le monde entier qui s'écroule.
