Après un long séjour à l'étranger, Mark retourne à Berlin pour y retrouver sa femme, Anna, et son fils Bob. Mais il réalise très vite que son épouse a changé. Il apprend notamment que celle-ci a un amant, un certain Heinrich. À cause de cela, les rapports du couple se dégradent rapidement. Mark décide alors d'engager un détective privé afin qu'il suive Anna, souvent absente du foyer. Un jour où Mark va chercher son garçon à l'école, il se rend compte que l'institutrice est le portrait craché de sa femme. Le détective, quant à lui, découvre avec effroi qu'Anna entretient une liaison avec... une « chose » monstrueuse.
