Né le 12 avril 1940 à Chicago, Herbert Jeffrey Hancock est un pianiste, claviériste et compositeur américain de jazz, l'une des figures les plus influentes de la musique du XXe siècle. Enfant prodige, il interprète un concerto de Mozart avec le Chicago Symphony Orchestra à onze ans. En 1963, il intègre le second grand quintet de Miles Davis aux côtés de Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter et Tony Williams, expérience fondatrice qui redéfinit les codes du jazz.
